Oddbins has begun trials of new chilled cabinets that allow customers to sample wine before they buy.
The 'Odd Pods' have been introduced in five of its flagship stores with a view to extending them to all 127 stores nationally if successful.
The cabinets hold ten bottles of wine and keep them fresh for up to three weeks.
Chairman Henry Young said: 'They act as a fantastic sales tool for staff to show consumers some of our more esoteric or high-value wines.'
Managing director Simon Baile said the group was on track to break even by the end of the year compared with a £6m loss last year.
He said sales growth was the highest since 2004 and online sales had doubled to £3m.
