The organisation of bridge in this country will change overnight tonight. After 10 yrs of consultation, accounting (sorry) and polling we move into "universal membership". This means that membership will increase by a factor of between 2 and 4 times. We move into the modern world and can ditch the Rolls, the tweeds, the yellow waistcoats and the plus-fours. Bridge is joining most other sports/games in that if one wishes to play at club level, one MUST join the relevant national association. There are around a million players in this country of which 30,000 contribute financially to the infrastructure of the game. From midnight tonight there is a whole new kettle of ball games.
