How do you rate Mathew Jukes for New Zealand ?

Based on his comment for Bordeaux:-

His 2007 Bordeaux Report is just a bunch of hearsay. There is no real experience of the harvest, nor any real insight into how the wines may develop - In fact just a load of meaningless spiel that connects climate problems with grape variety ripening. That everyone already knows !
He then lists the prestige and expensive chateau names that are on the shelves in the wine merchants in the UK.

He further lists Sauternes for 2007 that I believe compare to the 1997 vintage because the noble rot developed well in the damp and mild Autumn air conditions, but he doesn't tell you why or how they compare to 1997.

He says: " If the reds have a tricky time the sweet whites tend to be fantastic." .... A 'per chance' cliche' that was valid also for 2001 and 1983
Huh, a simplistic statement picked from someone else's blog. I'm Not Impressed.

Hmmnn, talking affordable noble rot, I wonder how 2007 Vouvray moelleux turned out - could be a bargain for laying down, that needs further investigation.

On one hand, Jukes alerted me to the delights of Wither Hills 2002 - Jackson Estate 2004 and Clifford Bay any vintage. On the other hand he does tend to stick by his favourite wines vintage in vintage out no matter how good or bad the wine.

Wither Hills went down hill rapidly after they sold out to Lion Nathan but he still tipped it in his top 250 wines of the year book from 2003 to 2007.

Also he does love to ramp up Jacob's Creek with daft comments like ' with JC in to bat for you you'll never be on a sticky wicket ' re JC shiraz rose 2006. Every general list these days seems to include at least one JC wine.

Could he be taking a backhander..who knows ?

We all write stuff that we don't agree with a few months later as both wines and tastes change but it's important that everything you write is an honest opinion at the time of writing.

The jury is out on Jukes but still, he was the dude who alerted me to Jackson Estate..

So I kinda like him

Having read more of his site, I forgive him for those tabloid writing / sounding bites.
However, let's have more exposure to those small producers who sweat their rocks off at the Petite Chateau properties, as well as a comparison with the second wines of the big names.

I do agree with his assessment of the 2007 white burgundies from the southern area, the Maconnais & Chalonnais villages which are affordable if you find them in the uk, Pouilly Fuise, Rully blanc, St. Ve'ran. Mind you....Prices have been creeping up since 1st released.
