Would it add to your enjoyment if I scored wines out of 20? I'm making some forward plans and thinking that scores might help some people. If I do it (and I will if you lot think it's worth it) the issue is, am I scoring the wine as a wine in its category or am I taking into account the price. When I do it for Jancis, the wine is judged against all other, for example, Barossa Shirazes, but I feel that it's better to consider value for money in a score. This, of course, can't be done if you're tasting blind. What do you think? |

BTW the dish that you served with the Sherry sounded absolutely wonderfull. What is the definitive Manzanilla ? one from Bodegas Hidalgo, and which particular region. I just don't know all these. But when in Andalusia, the dry Competa wine on small rocks is fab. I need a proper education. I did not appreciate over aged Manzanilla as an apperatif, because I did not understand which food should accompany the wine There is so much learning, and this is down to real experience. Mel, there are only about 220 masters of wine worldwide I'm told. when you get this prestigeous degree....Are you still going to associate with Low Life like us ? A score out of 20 narrows the difference between good and noteworthy, between exceptional and excellent and then finally extraordinary. I'm very happy with 15 and one half (can't do 1/2 on here) which means pretty good in my book. I appreciate Jancis's scoring sys. Price comparisons in their respective positions is also very important to many folks who have smaller pockets. Also comparisons in their respective regions is essential, and all this has to weighed and measured within the vintage, and what is acceptable and 'A Typical', even in a poor vintage. Do you want me to write an Excel programme to measure this lot ? I like the Quaffers Choice and Good Value emotions. There should however be another one for Brilliant for the dosh, and or, Extraordinary at any price. I was served a glass of Bahans Haut Brion 1998 at New Year - We should not measure clarets against this 2nd wine of a first growth, otherwise no claret would get a score above 8 out of 20 at your local Supermarket. You and your Forum Team here, have a good handle on, or a measure of what is avalaible and what is sensible for most pockets, and what is sensible when you can push the boat out a bit for special friends or an indulgent occasion. Does any of this make sense |

The much hyped Malcolm Gluck who wrote Superplonk but has now disappeared ( probably up his own backside ) gave ratings based partly on quality and partly on value/price. The problem was though that he became obsessed with price and was an inverted wine snob and was constantly making cheap shots mainly at the expense of the French. For eg Chablis £9.99 Waitrose £9.99 good grief......still, lush citrus and flint so suppose it's a classic of it's type but £9.99 pah ! 12/20 Peruvian unoaked chardonnay £3.49 Somerfield £3.49 wow what a price.....tastes like tap water but who cares. Better value here than many a Chablis at 4x the price 16/20 How about ratings based solely on the wine but with an added comment about value or the lack of. |
