Thanks for that. I was in my Sainsbury's last night and didn't see any of this. Am thinking of having a section of the front page for these wholesale offers, that have a time limit. Will get back to you. |

hi everyone I don't ike NZ Sauvignon much - find it a bit boring and formulaic. However, I have to admit it goes well with some oriental/spicy food, so am thinking about buying some in the sale. Which would you recommend? I wouldn't normally spend under 6 or 7 quid on wine. And what about their champagnes (specially the own label ones)? Anyone had the vintage? Btw, in reds, I'd heartily recommend the Weinert Malbec and Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano. And for sweeties, the super-complex, super-sticky PX from Barbadillo - think they rebranded it as "sticky pudding wine" to avoid calling it sherry (sad, indeed!) Oh, and (of course) the Musar 1999. Amazing to see a wine as legendary as this under a tenner! |

"Fashion victims" who are profoundly unfashionable, perhaps? On what exactly do you base your in-depth assessment of the wine, out of curiosity? |

ok, maybe 'crap' was a touch unfair, I have purchased the wine twice, the second time was to prove my palette had not originally gone awol or I had not been lumbered with a duff bottle. My grump? acidity. Tonsil dissolving acidity. Either that or they blend it with 'Toilet Duck'. Re-Weinert Malbec, I couldn’t see this instore, is it online only? |

At Sainsbury I would recommend Jackson Estate at £7--Montana at £5.50 and Stoneleigh at £5.25 The Montana reserve is very good but a lot richer than the others. Toilet Duck goes particularly well with hot curries. Needs to be well chilled and smell of lavender.. |

Thanks - was thinking of the Jackson as I like their Pinot. Very restrained, almsot Burgundian, even. GK - I wonder if you've had poor vintages, or maybe drunk it too young? I wouldn't touch it before 10 years. Try a 99 and lay it down for a year or two. Or if you do open it earlier, open a few hours before, at least. Acidity - maybe... this is something I value greatly in wine, and anything lacking in it doesn't do it for me. |

It was my birthday last night (actually, it was all day) and I'd pulled together a selection of my favourites. Guests had mixed wine knowledge, but the favourite of the evening, by a long way, was Musar 99. They started it all by themselves, when I was finishing off the main course in the kitchen and ALL BY THEMSELVES had started discussing it and comparing it to the others on offer - Cape Mentelle Cab/Merlot and Henschke's Henry's Seven. I had some serious whites but the Musar won hands down. Mind you, you have to like the medicinal, fabric plaster, leather and horse shit smell of Brettanomyces, which luckily I do. |

Yes, a beautiful dark brick red with a load of deposit. As velvetty smooth as a Pinot. I think if you serve a wine to a mixed group and don't try to make them concentrate on the wine, but they (as happened in this case) stop, mid-sentence and start obsessing about the beautiful smell of the wine, then the wine has done its job. |

Yes. Must say I am surprised - and heartened - that a group of non wine geeks universally loved the Musar. Maybe not just a wine for fashion victims, eh, GK? |
