If it has to be the Nicolas Feuliiatte then the cheapest at this moment is Majestic at £17. However Majestic's Christmas Offers will start at the end of this month when some of their fizz will be discounted even further. Be careful as a few will go up a little (Veuve Clicquot NV, Lindauer Special Res and Prosecco di Conetoolongtotype)

The Lindauer has been recc'd here as a cracking non-champers alternative at an affordable price so might be worth a go. There has been a number of other good nods as listed on this and the Morrisons thread.

If you order online remember to click through Mel's banner on the homepage

From today's Drinks Business

Festive Champagne price war begins
Morrisons has kicked off the 2010 pre-Christmas Champagne deal frenzy by slashing the price on certain grandes marques to as little as £13 per bottle.
The UK supermarket’s discount deals, which include Taittinger, Piper Heidsieck and Lanson, will feature for as long as stock as last and with a maximum restriction of three bottles per purchase.

As part of the deal, the supermarket will sell:
Piper Heidsieck Brut NV for £13.14 (originally £26.29)
Taittinger Brut NV for £16.91 (£33.82)
Heidsieck Monopole Gold Top Vintage for £14.99 (£29.99)
Lanson Black Label Brut NV for £14.74 (£29.49), and,
Lanson Rosé NV for £16.74 (£33.49)

The Champagne house representatives who were contacted by the drinks business were not available for comment on Morrison’s deals.

Such severe discounting is already having an impact on those responsible for listing Champagnes in different parts of the retail scene, as Tim French, Champagne buyer for department store Fortnum & Mason confirmed to the drinks business last week.

He said: “Champagne discounting is clearly damaging to Champagne as a whole. But it’s a drug that once you start it’s very hard to stop.

“This see-saw pricing is not helpful. From my position, it makes me more sensitive to listing grandes marques because I can’t run a business of heavy discounting.

“I would like to see more sensible consistent pricing and for those houses that do continually discount heavily, I’m going to struggle to get behind them,” he added.

Look no further: £20 for a Vintage (2004) Jacquart Mosaique @ Majectic. A champagne that -if required- can be kept in the cellar for a number of years.

The more you drink, the more w.c.

Duncan - OK. You are forgiven. Thanks for the info. I was aware that there were other offers around, but regrettably I find Lanson BL not to my taste, also Heidsick Blue Top. The reason I wanted the Nic F was because we have tried it before and found it to be excellent, nice clean taste with good flavours. I am quite fussy about fizz and have my likes and dislikes. Laurent Perrier is a plus one, but the really good ones like LP don't usually get discounted that much. Obviously if you can get one you like for £10-12 per bottle, it is worth buying half a dozen. OK. Veuve C, sometimes drops to around £17 but if you start talking Krug or Cristal, out of my reach I'm afraid. Have used Majestic in the past and always keep a watch out there. Think I'll wait for the war which you are convinced will start!!

Hello Nose

I can also confirm that the Jacquart NV is a favourite with my dear Misses and my eldest daugher (who is well into her thirties, so not without some experience)

When you ask them what they like about it - they say it is very drinkable, has a nice lasting flavour, PN & PM in the cuvee I have noted, and not too, they said ...."Up One's Nose and over throthy" . "A nice drink that you can leave in the glass for a while, when attending to the kids", is another comment.

I bought half a case in the Summer for the same money as noted by Ba. I shall wheel them out at Christmas, and this will take the pressure completely off a few premier cru, Moet and my Lanson's.

Good deal just now - BUT, there will be impetuous minds in the marketing meetings at HQ at the end of the month. Whose moving 1st ?

Or are they moving ?

Loft, I'm not looking for forgiveness.

Whilst I understood your reason for looking in here, and sympathised with your plight to find the right champagne when the offers are running; please understand; The decision to buy, is Your Call.

You may not have been, but I decided to forgive you anyway! I fully understand also that it is my decision and mine alone when it comes to laying the hard earned cash on a wine that others may think is overrated, but I believe cannot be beaten. I am not talking about one particular brand here understand, but it is true that cheap versions which are labelled champagne, are no better than sparkling wines, in fact often inferior. Can we call a halt to this discussion as I feel I have been sucked into the very spurious chat that I complained about. Thank you to all for your information!

Champagne is sparkling wine.

But true champagne comes from a very limited area and is produced in a particular way. No sparkling wine can match a good champagne ! Try a Pol Remy for instance , Ugh!

There's nothing 'limited' about the Champagne region, do some research, it now covers 357 villages, and as demand around the world grows the AOC expands.

It appears they keep discovering more and more of that unique soil, who'd have thought?
