I made a mistake in an earlier post. The garage is not detatched it is attatched but it has its own roof there is a room behind it so less than half of the rear wall is south facing. I'll check the temps. The wine is begin stored elsewhere at the mo, in a cool place, so no damage is being done until I sort the new storage solution.

I drank most of another La Couronne while looking at W. coolers that evening - Lush and with real but lovely tannic grip.

Find out what the thermostat range is. And no, you are not right. A constant low temp would be fabulous for SB and many top Chardonnays as well as fine wines generally. The cooler stores the wines on their sides in special wood racks, so the cork does not dry out. Vibration from the motor would only really affect unfiltered very grand marques with a sediment that normally settles on the glass in a half moon shape oposite the label near the bottom of course - that Frigidaire stated it had a special coolant, so totally unlike those shaking and very noisy drink machines seen all over the place this summer.

You will slow down evolution of claret and fine burgundy. Tartaric crystals may only appear if very cold, and they are harmless anyway.

You can buy cool storage at The Wine Society - Google, go there and see what the offer specifies for fine wine owners.

I won the wine cooler

I'm picking it up in the next couple of days.

I checked the garage and it does stay reasonably cool. It was 18C at the beginning of the weekend when it was quite warm.

Its on the north west side of the house (rear is south west) and there are lots of tall trees at the side that offer shade from the sun in the late afternoon / evening. I'll have to check on a blistering hot day if we get any more, but presently I think reds will be fine in a cabinet against the house side wall. I may line with foil insulation too. Whites will go in the cooler.

Tribs, where are you going to keep the cooler ?
be mindful that if its going in the garage it requires a certain minimum ambient temp so might struggle in the winter

Thermometer under the stairs has gradually climbed over the past couple of weeks from 19 up to 23 degrees at my place
not happy really but is still probably one of the coolest areas in my house.

I was once told that rapid temperature variance is meant to be worse than a constant higher temp due to expansion and contraction of air in the bottle.
Whether this is true or not I dunno.
Sadly I think I really need to try and find me a fridge/cooler to store my bottles just in case

I know what you mean Shez, my larder was warmer than the rest of the house yesterday following the temp drop outside. I left the door open for a few hours to let the cool breezes work their way through.

Tribs- it sounds like you've got everything covered, I suspect you will be fine with the new arrangement.

My inner sanctum hit 19C on Saturday. Down a bit now to 18C, but I will go down under as noted by GK, when I retire, for now though, I just got to say a few * prayers. The temperature swings are very slow here, and I will have to accept that, unless global warming continues - It has been very warm south of Watford.


Picked up a box of Ligny as well, had stock already, so wasn't so greedy. I know where the boxes are stashed, when the shelf location has been cleared, on offer till tomorrow night in this neck of the woods.
