My son Fred was given the choice of Tesco, Sains and Waitrose for an early evening shop and he chose Tesco - where have I gone wrong??

Anyway, had to take advantage of the 25% off 6 and was astonished to see a wine on the top shelf of French whites, in a hock bottle with one of those short, cheap-looking screwcaps, and a fairly obviously photocopied Louise Jadot Pouilly Fuisse label glued onto it.

Took it to a member of staff, who looked it up and confirmed that they don't stock LJ PF in Stroud (no surprise there). Have left it with him.

Why? What possible fun can anyone have with this. Ideas, anyone.

One of my contacts at Chelt'num has indicated that the Balkanian mafia is gravitating towards Stroud. Could be them, or just a silly prank. I took a few of my own books and deposited them on the relevant shelves in my local library once...thought that was fun.

Hi Mel,
We did touch on this one here, when you were laid low and totally out of it mid Summer.

I think GK stuck it up, after an indifferent claret from big T that he paid £2.99 for !

You Plonkers

Anyway, the new story is that Mel Jones, Master of Wine and very obliging parent, spots a fraud on the shelves in Straud.

Enjoy your week-end.

Ok - here is the scenario, the guys in the warehouse swapped it over with homebrew Hock (does anyone remember that stuff, the concentrate came in a litre tin, which one added to cool boiled water and some yeast) and fooled the warehouse supervisor and those numb sculls at Group 4a, allegedly. A load of work though

It was exactly that bottle. I can't see how it got onto the shelves, even, especially since it was in The Sun. You'd think they'd be on the lookout and that the bottles would be scanned in on arrival.

Fred is a wise man. I reckon he chose Tesco because he's heard you complaining that they have the worst wines and he thought you'd spend less time choosing.

Mel - Sorry, Fred. Another one bottle and i'll have my six and we can go.

Fred - No worries, mum. We've only been three hours. Last time,in Waitrose, we were there so long the manager asked if I wanted to be put up for adoption

Having gone to Defcon 2 label wise, I now notice that the label on my Rabbit Row is different from those on the 2 sites that stock it. Dunc's comment that the label was awful got me thinking. Mine is a simple green square with a white-out line drawing of a bunny-wunny. The ABV is ½% out as well but the references are definitely VM.
