I can't mention the price because I bought on the Offer for "one day only" from Marks & Spencer. You can look it up on the web.
Consumed with crispy skin, gas fired grilled herby fresh trout with grilled parmesan cheese topping on onion and herb mash, a remarkable peppery cut to the palate from the Secano with this dish. Cordon bleu - Yum.
Secano have fixed nearly all of the issues I had last time. There is more oak
just the right amount for this fruit, actually.
A beautifully balanced wine. These Chileans really know how to clone a fruity burgundy, Leyda valley rock and subsoil, the terroire that comes through in the depth of flavour is equal or better than Marlborough (for me). The nose is a bit short, maybe under developed, needs more time.... but Hey ! At the price point this wine is a revelation. Lovely pinot forest floor flavour already - closer to Nuits than to Beaune. Great lift to this fruit, and not confected nor sweet nor jammy. How can this be ?
If there is one complaint - I think the smoke is a tad overdone. Someone charred out a few too many barrels, or what ?
For the money, and suiting my burgundian taste buds, better than Marlborough PN at twice this buying price - I'm tired and fed-up with girly sweet pinot noir. For new world, only surpassed by Central Otago at considerably more than twice the price, and not far behind, without that certain Huggenot elegance, to best Franschhoek SA steep slopes pinot noir at three times the price.
For burgundy lovers on a budget - Watch out NZ.
