A liitle dryer than previous years but still really nice. The price, however, is not. Going up by £1 per annum for the last 3 yrs.

That thimbleful of floral somehow returned on day two. Lubbly Jubbly.

Second bottle, 2 months later is very much to my taste. Always consistent over the years and sometimes on offer. A staple for me.

I had a Gavi La Battistina '12 at the weekend, around the same price and widely available.

I was surprised at how rich and 'citrusy' the flavour was, lots of lemon and grapefruit with a subtle bitter-rich finish, not so much of the green apple and soft grape skin flavours I recall. I'm not sure where they were heading with this style but I don’t intend to follow.

Gavi La Battistina '12 - from the Wine Society ?

Made by Araldica Vini Piemontesi Soc. Co-op. a.r.l.
Araldica is the bottling and marketing arm of a group of co-operatives in the Asti/Acqui Terme region of Piedmont. It is ably run by Claudio Manera, whose wife Lella is also an oenologist working in the laboratory. They are very important producers of Barbera d'Asti and Moscato and also make excellent Gavi and cortese. In 1998 they bought the marvellous hillside estate, Il Cascinone, totally revamping the vineyard and cellars and by 2011 had 60 hectares in production here
.

Looks as though they may have played with the fermentation, and /or picked the crop a bit late. I had a Macon blanc produced with that sort of effect / style - Rhetorical Q. I don't know why they want to make them richer or heavier ? Over extraction ? How should a Cortese be when made in the traditional style ?

This is another comment:
An aromatic, zesty, nose with citrus, lime and pineapple, and a hint of minerality. Juicy, weighty fruit with an immensely long finish.

I picked it up from an Indy in Nth Wales last week. It is certainly a richer, heavier style. I have always liked Gavi but I wasn’t keen on this, I would imagine its pretty easy to produce a rich and weighty wine, the challenge is balance, lighter wines can get away with being 'off balance' and often benefit from one or two dominant flavours but as the wine gets richer the margin for error reduces, a complex wine needs balance else it becomes a car crash. This is an M6 pile-up IMO.
