From: theallens Sent: 14 March 2006 09:18 To: mel@quaffersoffers.co.uk Subject: Sauvignon Blanc tasting - February I believe you had recommended the Stoneleigh before in a previous tasting and our local Waitrose doesn't stock it. Managed to track one down at another branch and with some friends had a mini-tasting with that, the Montana Reserve and the Babich. Pleased to tell you that the Montana Reserve was the favourite. I have drunk this one before and just about preferred the Stoneleigh myself, which came 2nd. I must congratulate you and your team of tasters, 14 wines of the same variety, must have been really difficult. As a pure amateur I would think that 3 or 4 would be enough (of the same wine). Thank you very much for carrying out this extensive tasting, most informative. Although you say that the NZ wines are the most expensive, ?6.99 for the Stoneleigh is not too much to pay for a good wine! Reply from mel I agree that the Stoneleigh is very good value. Their Pinot Noir is beautiful - Waitrose ?7.99. It needs to be thought about though. No point giving it to people at a busy party. You need people who are going to concentrate on it and notice what's going on. |

I am also a big fan of the Montana SB Reserve, I recently bought a case of six from Tesco Online during a promotion, got them for ?5.30 each. I think the reserve is definitely a notch up in quality from the standard SB. I have read recently that 'people in the trade' are getting a bit fed up with the New Zealand SB movement & style. I don't think I could ever get bored with a decent NZ SB, a perfect balance of fresh, citrus and tropical flavours, best served only lightly chilled methinks. |
