:qofyuk: Aaaaaaaarrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh.

:qofyuk: Mel's write up in the 'articles' section is way, way too gentle.

:qofyuk: This is undrinkable medicinal antiseptic. :qofyuk:

THE EXQUISITE COLLECTION GAVI 2014 £5.49 12.5%

Blend: 100% Cortese
Region: Piedmont, Italy
Availability: Core range, on shelf nationwide now
Sweet aroma. The palate’s a bit furry on the tongue. Not for me.

BA, that very brief TN, is a polite No. I really don't understand why you bought this wine ?

The medicinal disgust that you describe, could also be an oxidation issue. Was the wine sealed with a screw cap, perhaps another shopper wanted to "try before they buy" And didn't, of course.
Invited guests to the Aldi taste-off should be diplomatic - good manners

If Mel says, Not for me . . . . . . . .

Gavi's reputation among critics rarely seems to match the prices that most wines from there tend to command. In his Barolo to Valpolicella, Nicolas Belfrage notes that Gavi's reputation for producing one of the finest whites in Italy is "not fully justified, according to some." He goes on to say "that it has been one of the most hyped is beyond dispute, and when it's good - full enough of body to match the acidity, with a twist of lime cordial on the nose and finish - it can, in the right context, be just the thing," which is an absolute clinic in damning with faint praise. The Oxford Companion to Wine's entry on Cortese says that "at its best, the wine is clean and fresh," and, generally, that "the use of oak is usually misguided." In their entry on Gavi they say that "with care in the vineyard and cellars, the delicate flavours of the Cortese grape, retained thanks to the moderating maritime influence due to its proximity to the Ligurian coast less than 70 km/40 miles way, can yield pleasurable wines that are easy to drink," which, again, is hardly a ringing
endorsement.

I enjoyed this Gavi tease:
Lean, aloof and perfectly tailored. You travel
the world with an air of Italian sophistication.
Your cosmopolitan friends would be surprised to
learn that you were born a simple farm girl in the
hills of Monferrato. Look at you now Ms Cortese.
In your element, the spokeswoman for a trendy
designer label.
