Printed off Mel`s report on the Christmas releases a while back.

Just popped into a store and picked up a Tokaji Aszu 6 2000 vintage.

As a novice on sweeties is this for drinking now or laying down ??

They the 04 Marquis in as well but gave this a miss on this visit.

Richard

Just searched and found this info from Aldi website.

A double Gold Award winner in 2012's top two wine competitions this is literally one of the world's finest dessert wines. Tokaji Aszu is distinguished by its racing acidity that acts as a perfect foil to its intense sweetness. This particular example is vintage 2000 and has sublime orange marmalade, honey, lemon and dried apricot notes married with citrus and zesty grapefruit. Perfect to drink now with desserts or salty cheese, it will also keep for many years.

Plus general vintage info,
2000 Vintage Report

The millennium magic also shone on Tokaj. We have never witnessed two great consecutive vintages as the 1999 and 2000. Winter was quite short and blossoming started very early. There was very hot and dry weather during the whole summer. Ripening started by the middle of August for the Muscat and beginning of September for Furmint and Hárslevelu. Thanks for these extreme conditions berries were fully ripen by the time shrivelling started. Three quarter of the aszú berries had more than 70 % sugar level, which is extremely high.

Berries had excellent aroma with relatively low acidity but wines have been charming since the first time they were tasted. Wines made in this vintage are really elegant with a nice balance and lovely aromas. Wines are very smooth with great complexity and long lasting finish. Following the extraordinary 1999 vintage, the beautifully elegant 2000 shows just how difficult and different it continues to be to produce these wines on a year to year basis.

Will open this Christmas now.
Sounds like a decent wine to me ??

My local Aldi tends to heavily discount its Christmas wines after the holiday season. I will be paying even closer attention when January rolls around and the tinsel is safely packed away for another year, there could be some real bargains to be had.

The only other wine from the Premium Christmas selection they had was the Margaux

GK,
you might be interested to hear that Aldi are selling Batemans Vintage Ale 2012 for £3.29

Similar I guess to fuellers vintage ale (available at Waitrose ~£4.50), the box says Best after 2012 & before 2027
I picked up a couple but would probably need more to get round to seeing how they develop with age

Brilliant - Own Homebrew is very nice when done right. We used to do it many many years ago, and may eventually return to it, now that Mrs D is retired. She's the master chef around here - I did the lugging, fining and cleaning.

Talking of the Batemans BBB - I used to take that between '73 and '76 when we lived at the foot of the Wolds near Horncastle. I quite liked Batman's, only 30 miles down the road from Wainfleet Saint Mary on the Lincolnshire coast near Skegness. Small Batemans free houses were all over the pea and potatoe fields at one time, "draw the curtains and lock the front door" was normal practice on a Saturday night after 11:00pm

My word - things have changed out of all proportion in my lifetime

Dunc, these modern premium kits are a world away from kits of the past, the quality of the beer they produce is as good, if not better than most of the real ale you'll get served in the pub.

Just make sure you pay a little extra for a premium twin can kit from producers such as Muntons, Woodfordes etc. No fining or farting around required.
