This came in the mixed November case of the month.

Because I've enjoyed Puglian negro wines bought back from the region, I know what good ones taste like.

I shouldn't rush out for this. High acidity to give the wine more lift, too high really for the style ! But...... it didn't cut it, as far as the character of this rustic and earthy and deep Puglian red should be. Not tannic enough either ? It should have, or at any rate, is much more interesting if a peppery note and grouty cut on the palate is experienced on the finish

This is what you want if buying this wine :

Canonico Salento

Perhaps 2007 was a better vintage ?

I had the Marks one with Pasta with a light sauce, it doesn't have the depth & richness to complement more robust Italian dishes.

One to try though - and M&S is very convienient.

There seems to be two of them, both just over £6

If this is the one with 'Negroamaro' as the main lettering on the label, they are claiming chocolate and the only review is very good.

The Masseria fares a lot worse.

Thanks for checking that out Mr B. No, I am not negative, because there is some of the Puglian character, but it is pretty limited.

I'm sorry folks can't try the real McCoy, which may be a bit more expensive at say $10 dollars or so, if it goes to the States with less Gordon Brown tax added and then VAT on the top. I say GB, because he added tax but left his darling Scotch alone for two years running.

Chocolate ! - Phooey. I can see how choc could be experienced as a flavour with a hearty concentrated version - But not with this wine.

Trouble is - with so much damn tax and then logistic costs added, it is difficult for Marks to do better at that price break

A wine bottle of petrol is about £1 due to HUGE taxes. Perhaps GK could make us some elderberry petrol.

Didn't mean you Dunc, there is a very negative review on their site.

Ba, are you sure ? Have now found the wine on M&S, reinstated after the mixed Case disco offer. Huh - it weren't there as a single when I bought ! The review by Convoy is more positive than mine;

1 review for Negroamaro

I marked the wine down because for a very young Negro, I want the chewy and grouty tannins (which aren't harsh) which gave me on the personal import last time, a nice ground black pepper cut on the palate. Perhaps there was a drought in '07 which gave the fruit (skins) that extra dimension. Or may be this version is irrigated in the vineyard and young vines ?

Very subjective. Convoy wanted a Mod version
