Wiese & Krohn Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004, £13

Rich nose of toffee apple and dried herbs, good dark rim, still young. Deep and fresh in flavour, plum and cinnamon, orange peel and lots of cherry, a touch of bitter chocolate in the long finish. Nicely rounded with good alcohol integration, potential to mature well although not a long term keeper, tannins were medium to low.

A very good unfiltered LBV.

Cheers for this. All the more so.....and because of the bottle outlay required, it is overlooked on wine forums, and if you go to a port forum, everthing reviewed is well above most people budget, even for puchases made 10 years ago.

I have a few in boxes but nothing more recent that '82 for VP, and I forget the vintage of the couple of LBV's I have, and anyway, they are not anything approaching the quality of your unfiltered Krohn.

The wine sounds great value - versus....say a claret up to £14.

Cheers Dunc, I've often considered Port & Sherry to be great value wine, you get so much for your money. I tend to stick to LBV's from good producers, even a decent VP can cost as little as £18, cracking VFM when all's considered.

It does sound delightful. Is it readily available GK?

I will check independent merchants - Not stores ! Indy owner driver places you suggest is best for these. Last Night at 10 just before closing, I stopped at a Sains in Dorset, on my way back from my folks, knowing that the 25% disco was closing - and I did scan the port and sherry section - but did not know anything useful, when making a considered selection, the fortified wines appeared to be the usual branded stuff - so yet again - a lack of knowledge put me off.

Can Quaffers bank on a few more reminders from quinta GK noval, of a wine that is all too often ignored Yet given the effort and dedication to produce, is begging to be enjoyed.
