Gluck, yeah, what's he up to now? I was a regular poster on his Superplonk forum back in the day. I liked the way he got up the noses of certain people in the wine trade. I admire anyone who's not afraid to put their foot in their mouth occasionally.

On second thoughts..... you may have hit on something there G, is there a an opportunity for an organic allotment growing wine nerd to start a niche site?

parsnipsandpinot.co.uk ?
corkandkale.co.uk ?
gettingpissedintheshed.co.uk ?

I was also a regular on Superplonk. See Malcolm from time to time. I think he's got a few books in the pipeline.

I still have some of the old Superplonk books and they can be very useful at times but I began to find Gluck to be something of an inverted snob. Often relying on cheap shots to knock the French with comments like ' this £5 vin du pays wine is as good as Sancerre at twice the price ' which was true in the sense that it was bloody awful and some Sancerre is bloody awful but it's a bit misleading for the punter trying to find enjoyable wines at the £5 mark.

Also if a wine was a couple of pounds more expensive than he thought it should be he crucified the price and forgot about the wine. A comment like ' Classic unoaked Chablis but too expensive at £12 ' would be fine but ' £12 no way ! ' is not helpful at all.

Still......if he brought Superplonk back i'd still buy it as he gets through even more supermarket wines than Bacchus.

I agree. I enjoyed his writing style, but got a bit fed up of him going off on one, far out of proportion to the issue. And the rudeness to great wines got on my tits as well.

On offer yet again and '09 still a good deal. Not a huge kick, not wimpy. A sort of Goldilocks efffort. Unintrusive but very drinkable with hints of all the right stuff. Sorry purists, I like this.
