Trapiche Broquel Pinot Noir 2010 £9.99 Mendoza 100% Pinot Noir Aged for 9 months in French oak barrels 13% Lovely aroma. Oaky and warm with blackcurrant. Very savoury, oaky taste. Nice. Quite different from either France or NZ. More savoury, with darker fruit – a hint of blackcurrant. Viñalba Malbec 2011 £6.79 Mendoza 100% Malbec Unoaked 14% A very light style of malbec. Pleasant, spicy, easy. Finca Mirador Shiraz 2010 £6.49 Mendoza 100% Shiraz 40% aged for 10 months in American oak barrels 14% Deep, rich, brambly nose. Sweet and rich taste, with some minty, cooked blackcurrants. Nice. Vinalba Patagonian Cabernet Merlot 2009 £8.99 Patagonia 80% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Merlot 50% aged in French oak barrels for 12 months 14.50% Dark, rich and blackcurranty nose. Dark chocolate, quite bitter, flavour. The Co-operative Mount Barker Shiraz 2009 £7.99 Mount Barker 100% Shiraz 18 months in 50% new oak (French and American) barrels 14.50% Baked, rubbery aroma, as expected. Light and fresh in the mouth, with a little tannic structure. Pleasant and a very good price. Casillero del Diablo Carmenère 2010 £7.99 Rapel 85% Carmenère, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon 70% aged in American oak barrels for 8 months 13.50% Lovely dark, rich, baked raspberry aroma. The smell when you make raspberry jam. Mmm. Black peppery taste. Savoury and creamy, with a lot of sweet vanilla. Chono Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2009 £8.99 Maipo 100% Cabernet Sauvignon 12 months in French and America oak barrels 13.50% Dark, spicy and with some blackcurrant. A bit sweet and a bit stalky. Not terribly impressed. Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Syrah 2010 £6.99 Colchagua 100% Syrah 6 months in new and second use American and French oak barrels 14% Spicy, oaky nose. Nice taste. The price is about right. Montes Alpha Syrah 2009 £10.99 Colchagua 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Viognier 12 months in French oak barrels 14.50% Very rich, deep and inviting nose. Oaky, smoky bacon taste. It’s lovely but I’d slice a bit of alcohol off it. |
