Lots of green sauvignon aroma. Off-dry and easy.

La Grille Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Attractive, floral nose. Quite a bitter taste.  Catty and with some peapods. Needs food.

Jour de Nuit Chardonnay Viognier 2010
£9.99
Languedoc Roussillon
65% Chardonnay, 10% Viognier, 15% Sauvignon Blanc

Light on the nose. This is perfectly pleasant white wine. It could be anything.

Domaine Brocard Chablis Premier Cru  2009
£12.99
Northern Burgundy
100% Chardonnay

Quite a rich nose. This has some depth, some ripeness. It lasts well. Great food wine.

Billaud-Simon Chablis Premier Cru 'Mont de Milieu'  2008
£16.99
Chablis
100% Chardonnay

Creamy nose. Very full-flavoured and ripe. Lovely.

Domaine Gérard Thomas St Aubin 'Le Champ Tirant'  2010
£13.99
St. Aubin
100% Chardonnay
10 months in oak (Allier/Voges) with 20% new oak barrels

Wonderful aroma. Nutty, oaky and so promising. There’s definitely oak, but it’s very nicely balanced and not at all chewy. A cracking price for a wine of this quality.

Domaine des Forges Savennières 2009
£9.99
Loire Valley
100% Chenin Blanc
12 months in oak barrels
13.50%
Oxidative nose, as expected. Quite vegetal as well. This is a brave choice by the Co-op because Savennières is seriously odd and I’m not sure their customers will understand. There was no way of saying that without sounding snobby, but I don’t think the majority of Waitrose customers would understand it either. Delicious taste. It’s exactly as it should be.  Nutty, baked appley and intense. Bravo, Co-op!

Just tried the 2011 Dom de Forges Savennieres.
Very dry, very acidic with and very little fruit character. *insert 'sucking on a lemon' face emoticon here.

Needs food and/or a few more years.
I might be tempted to try a dosage with few spoons of honey, if only it was a screw cap.

That stuff needs a few years to mellow. Can be really vinegary when young.

As Mel said - interesting wine for Co-Op to sell. I got 2 bottles whilst it was special so will see how the other develops :?:
