Post subject:  THE WINE SOCIETY ITALIAN WHITES - SEPTEMBER 2011

Pinot Bianco, Isonzo del Friuli, Lorenzon 2010
£8.75 12.5% The Wine Society
Pinot bianco is the Cinderella grape of Italy making some of its loveliest and fragrant flavoured white with round and gentle palate. Understandably the favourite white of father and winemaker son Davide Lorenzon.

The bottle looks very big, but is light. Good, spicy, correct nose. Might even have thought it was Pinot Grigio, but in a Pinot Gris style. Dreary taste, though.

Iocalia Vermentino di Sardegna, Melis 2010
£8.50 13.5% The Wine Society
100% vermentino. No oak treatment. From Melis's own vineyards near Terralba in the south-east of the island. Vermentino has been one of the Mediterranean's hidden gems and makes wines of real personality in Sardinia. This is an excellent example:  aromatic and fresh with full and generous flavour but lightness of touch.

Nicely fruity nose. Lovely taste. Really bright and refreshing.  A touch of pear drop on the finish, but it’s very attractive.

Moraitis Sillogi 2010
£9.95 12% The Wine Society
Theo Moraitis's 2010 whites all won prizes this year. A delightful fragrant, gentle wine from 50% each organically grown assyrtiko and malagoussia on the island of Paros.

Sillogi means 'collection'. Beautiful aroma.  Perhaps like fresh and very ripe apricots. A touch of spritz, but full-bodied, full-flavoured and pretty long.  I might think this was a Albarino/Viognier blend.
