Doña Dominga Reserva Sauvignon Blanc/Viognier 2010 Colchagua Valley, Chile 7.49 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Viognier. 60% of Sauv. comes from the old-vine Angostura Estate in Colchagua Valley, planted in 1912 from original pre-phylloxera vines. The remaining Sauv. is from the new Paredones Estate, the first vineyard to be planted in the Cool Coastal hills of the Colchagua Valley, 8km from the Pacific Ocean. The grapes were hand-picked with a yield of 58hl/ha, whole bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 24 days at 13°C for the Sauv and 16°C for the Viognier. No malolactic or oak maturation. Bottled August 2010. Winemakers Mario Geisse and Jose Maturana. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Alc 12.5%, TA 3.61g/l, pH 3.2, RS 4.97g/l. Waitrose Wine Direct and 220 branches. Not a very inviting nose. Tastes quite sour. Not impressed. Waitrose Sauvignon Blanc, Viña Valdivieso 2011 Aconcagua Valley, Chile 7.99 100% Sauvignon Blanc produced in partnership with Viña Valdivieso, with the blend made in conjunction with Waitrose buyer Nick Room. The grapes were sourced from premium vineyards in coastal Aconcagua (Leyda and Casablanca) with a cool coastal climate and poor granitic soils, ideal for making outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes were hand-harvested and extremely carefully handled to maintain fruit expression. Then cool fermented in stainless steel, and bottled within 6 months. Alc 12.5%, TA 6.25g/l, pH 3.18, RS 1.38g/l. Waitrose Wine Direct and 246 branches. Beautifully aromatic – green and with some very fresh asparagus. Good balance, nice weight and the right length. Good price. |
