Sweetly floral nose. Full-flavoured but not that interesting.

Laurent Miquel Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier 2011 IGP Pays d'Oc, France
8.49
100% Viognier which has been grown on very stony, calcareous-clay soils with lutte raisonnée. The vines are short-pruned and have an average age of 10 years. The grapes were machine-harvested in September in the cool of the night with a yield of 55 - 60hl/ha and immediately pressed. Fermented in stainless steel. Winemaker Laurent Miquel. Alc 13.0%, RS 1.3g/l. Available from Waitrose Wine Direct and 236 branches.

Ripe nose. Quite light in the mouth. A good wine for friends who don’t like this, that and the other. Easy and likeable.

I thought I'd try the 2012 vintage on offer at Ocado £7.99 (7.49) may be.

Not so ripe a nose as the 2011. Reading the above, not as full figured as the 2010. A bit benign on fragrance (I had the beginning a cold last night). A dryer style than I expected, not much going on, very light in the mouth, lowish acidity, short legs and shortish in flavour and personality.

The ubiquitous viog style for 2010 onwards - Laurent Miquel has been attending the Brent Marris school of wine making ! No complaints.

This wine is much improved on the next day, store in the fridge overnight, then served and left to warm up in the kitchen.

The wine opens up, body and depth of flavour build quite well. I must get used to these modern styles that are ever so young, before rushing to judgement.

Yeah - nothing wrong with this.
