Majestic - This is a claret parcel that you could have acquired over the last 3 months or so. Moulis and Listrac are little appelations between Marg and St. Julien. The better M&L clarets are CB, some of these were graded CBs at 3 levels, such as "exceptional" but the Paris courts stopped that award system, even though I found it realistic and properly representative of notches up in quality. This one is a CB, no more, but has acquired a lovely flavour. 55% cab 40% merot & 5% PV I think (PV purple hue). There is no St Julien cigar box to speak of. It is much more like a very light and simple CB Margaux, no real perfume either. (I've not drunk an ordinary Margaux which has not been classed as a CB ? ) except the supermarket mixers ! A lovely mature flavour though, so light c/w sweet cassis notes on 1st opening, that you can enjoy at cellar temperature, and as an apperatif. Nice light claret with good colour, and sweet balance, perhaps a little 'sous bois' on the back palate and gravel mineral on the finish, which isn't short. This is 10 years now, texture and body builds a modest amount during the evening, so don't complain that it feels a little watery & lacking power on opening. Feels like a very welcome 12% alc in the mouth, and for me, a charming little CB with no sharp corners. For a tenner - A lovely number as a house claret. Also NB, grand vin long cork, screw down well to the hilt, before pulling NB - I've seen this wine on the '01 at £180 a case DP & VAT paid, in one shipper's warehouse ! Well done Maj. |
