First: A guide New Year tae ane and a' An mony may ye hae And during a' the years tae com Oh happy may ye be Now la Grille Pinot Noir 2008 Maj. £6.99 > £6.00 Very thin but wonderful colour. Rasberry there but has to be sought out with just a slight "going over" hint of cherries. It is so light it could be a pleasant summer drink slightly chilled. 8/10 |

8/10 is a good score for a cheap pinot. Yeah, the Sains TTD cote de nuits villages was very similar to that La Grille PN, sorta fermented vinous cherryade. Very light, very easy, some acidity, but too sweet. Generaly, I've come to the conclusion, that I prefer this very light style from the pinot noir, than the overblown over extracted soupy ones at the pre £10 level. They need to get the girly sweetness off it next That Sains TTD was very DYA, very fragile and would go over to a light salad dressing if left open for more than 36 hours, even in the fridge ! |

I agree that it is decent score, but I try to rate a wine including the price. If I had paid £10/12 I'd be sobbing into my thin wallet. |

OK, The horse in this instance is ole Hugh Johnson. The abreviation is one that is used in his, and another 52 contributors for the Pocket Wine Reference Book. The earliest version of this Mitchell Beazley publication I have is 1986. The pocket reference is produced annually, and the abreviation is one that has been used for 3 decades I believe, probably since 78. I was therefore surprised that a ? was made. Anybody else not familiar with this abreviation ? I'll have to get a lot more with-it - me thinks, my time warp references go way back before windows and the web |

Mel - At 1st I thought you were teasing me. This pocket book is quite good for warehouse and auction browsing before iPhone and blackberry, the last one I have is 2002. A quick check on vintages - Claret back to the 70's and Burgundy back to 78. Several thousand important french wines, thinner for the rest of the world, and references to refresh the ole grey matter. Not perfect at all, but a very handy size for a trouser pocket. I bet your Dad had a few of these Yeah, before the millenium in particular, and way back to the late 70's early 80's, I quite imagined that many folks like you and me going around auctions, or Majestic, or the ole Wizard warehouses or Laithwaites would slip this into their pocket before leaving the house. Yeah..... What do I know about other wine lovers ? Not very much ! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hugh-Johnsons-P ... gy_b_img_a |
