Inspired by Mel, I decided to open a bottle of this wine last night - yes you guessed perhaps, it came over to England very well padded, via a suit case from Milano airport. This wine made in Puglia, is the region known as the heel of Italy. This is what they say about the wine: Black and bitter" in Italian, not surprisingly Negroamaro has origins in the Southern Italy's Puglia region and is an important grape both on its own and as a blending grape. It contributes a rich, slightly rustic mouthfeel to a finished wine imbued with a slightly burnt, earthy quality that accentuates deep, roasted plum and mocha toned fruit. Cantine Due Palme is a social co-operative situated in CELLINO SAN MARCO (BR), between the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto, in the middle of SALENTO wine producing area (APULIA REGION IN THE SOUTH OF ITALY) The wine, is not particularly bitter cherry, but is a dark fruit bomb, with loads of mocha, and not dry (nice mouth feel), and actually, quite good with plain dark unsweetened chocolate truffles - bought in Waitrose. A very decent and very full wine. Beautifully made wine, really impressed with this. Some of these country wines made with indigenous grapes, the way they have been made for centuries are very underrated by us Brits. Hmnnn, I shall ask my Italian friend to bring back one or two more wines made in Puglia by the regional co-ops. If you are eating Italian - this generous wine with good length would be mega trendy and quite perfect from a producer respected by the the locals. Good honest wine with real character - could do with some UK exposure in the independant merchants. |

I cant find this wine on their web site; But estimating from other wines, I'd say 5 - 7 Euro. I will find out when Vittoria returns. She will no doubt buy properly when she is down south. Apparently, the wealthy producers from the north, keep knicking their regional fruit to bulk up their fancy labels, and sell for much bigger money. Martin tells me that their is a lot of resentment amongst the local growers, and one day, the co-op hopes to have sufficient income to say: Push Off |
