Was Hoping to have snagged a bargain when getting for nearly half price at £9. ......Sadly not!

Disappointing at most price ranges: thin and insipid.
No real barnyard that id hope for. A small hint of fruit and minerality showing itself early on after opening but faded after a few hours.

I'd have taken a punt with the 2005 vintage in Mercury myself. These lesser burgundies and the generic mix cuvees from the outskirts of the Cote d'Or are very pale, Shez. You know that is the way of these affordable burgundy rouge wines, You Do ! Very rarely do you find them structured and full and deep, yet the 05's normally have half decent legs from the lesser domaines in the sub £20 offerings.

I gotta tell you Shez, that even very approachable Beaune monopole 1er's on the 2005 vintage from Chanson are pretty pale, but then they grow superbly in the glass / or carafe, and appear fuller in the mouth.

If the Dom LM Mercurey does not grow with carafe time, it is not so clever !!

We'll have talk more and sort you something that is going to please.

In the meantime - enjoy the Christmas holiday. Cheers for now

There could be a bit of bottle variance with the LM mercurey - Maybe ? One has to wonder though, why Sainsbury discounted the wine so much for an aged burgundy :?:

Otherwise, You Must Return this wine to Sainsbury's for credit.

There are some good PN offers at Majestic, and an '09 (non cru) Beaune available on a vintage that I and many many others rate for concentration and ripe fruit that needed very little sorting (a very good starting point for a cheapy) that I would def. cellar for a while.

I have no idea what the Jadot Beaune 1er is like on the '08 vintage. I have decided to seek out the '09s, if or when they become available.
The Jadot Beaune 1er was nice on the '02 and '05 vintages.

I'll keep the other 2 and have the LM 09 cotes du nuits and the 06 clos du marche to compare with...
Will keep my eyes peeled for the Jadot, altho have not been blown away with previous tastings of some of the LJ PNs in the past

The '06 clos du marche

That Clos du Marche is a LM monopole I beleive, you should try that one next, to be sure that you enjoy Louis Max's style of burgundy making. I only say this because both he and Antonin Rodet make their volume wines rather pale and a little thin by comparison, and with high acidity, because these generic cuvees are made from other growers / other owners vineyards 2nd or even 3rd pass fruit, and therefore don't have the weight and all the flavours of the grand vin.

It's all rather discrete, this outsourcing business ! Yet... all too damn obvious when you taste the wine.

Shez, I have it on good authority that the Beaune above:
Domaine Robert Gibourg Beaune Montee Rouge 2009, is for value and QPR generally, a proper and half decent burgundy, that will benefit also for cellaring. This wine is considered alive enough to evolve correctly.

You may want to persuade your Maj to open one on the tasting table. Stocks are low, so I have reserved some in a box around the back ..... to hit the card in the new year :wink: I will leave a TN to confirm

I am hoping this may have been a duff bottle as I enjoyed a bottle if the 2006 clos du marche which was us another league... Bo formal notes taken at the time but may try and hit something down later tonight

Clos du Marche is wine made by him from fruit from his own domaine.

Another League - Proves exactly the point we've been making about these cobbled together burgundies, that may be made from the dross rejected by the owners / growers when they were harvesting for their own grand vin or first label.

Yup, it wasn't just the bottle in my first note: This is definately crap
Not even over the hill, I just think it never even made it up the hill!
Stay well away. I returned the third bottle back to Sainsburys
The clos du marche 2006 is waaaaaay better and Duncan tells me the cote du nuits villages 2009 is looking pretty good

Ok, we move on to a Burgundy thread now, and 'hopefully' the accuracy of my tortured opinions !

Dom Louis Max - Oh dear..... I'd better have another '09 CdN villages this week, to make sure it is 'a bit more than' ok. At least I can work out whether the wine is going anywhere. As you know I did spoil myself recently with a Chanson 2005 Beaune Greves 1er. Since Bollinger took over overall supervision of Chanson, I do think there has been an upping in qual & consistency. Therefore, that '05 Greves can be the bench mark :roll:

The weather has been brilliant this week-end. To celebrate, a half decent Burgundy treat, either rouge or blanc in the Spring is - Yum.
