Chaps,

Morrisons have Heidsieck Gold Top 2004 on offer.
£30.00 for two bottles, not sure if this is of any interest to fellow members on here ??
Anyone tried this one ??

Regards
Richard

I'm no fizz expert, but I am a fan of Heidsieck Gold Top and that is a decent price. Its £20 at Majestic. If they have any 2005, then that would probably be better though.

Yes, I'm in accord with that, at this price level, the '05 would be a superior wine.
'04 is racy and fine for 1er and grand cru. However for lesser marques the 2000, 2002, 2005, would be my choices of recent vintges at H. gold top level.

£15 is a bargain nevertheless. Majestic's marketing note says it's quite reasonable.

Very strange my fizz expert says the 2004 is a fantastic vintage much better than 2005 ??

Also read this about the recent vintage releases.
Where have you read the 05 is better.

Always happy to be proven wrong.

Bought two this morning to try, no shakes if this is poor at £15.00

'04 is racy and fine for 1er and grand cru. Yes.

Richard, '05 was only 1 notch below at 1er level, if at all. You will find controversies when on the way down to base camp.

'04 was a razor sharp vintage for the best vineyards on the best slopes, not an easy growing season at all for ripening, and the top cru wines will be amazing. Getting the ripeness-acidity levels right at the top of the tree is a different story. Down in suburbia, where the ordinary mortals are to be found, the wine will be thinner, and much less fine, and therefore a better growing season such as '05 will produce more balanced champagne with more substance and flavour.

Your book talks about Krug level wines - it is damn near pointless talking about Krug when evaluating the scenario across the plains.

We conclude therefore, and by interpolation, and this is only an opinion for boggy standard marques, blogged by me and tribs.

For me, Heidsieck Gold Top is not a classic keeper EVEN in more sustantial and fuller years, HGT is pretty light indeed. If the '04 gold top was brilliant, it would not be £15 quid.

Does that help any ?

My expert chap mainly drinks decent fizz and only go on his knowledge.

I havent even see much 05 fizz for sale on my many shopping trips so havent sampled anything yet.

2002 is the vintage I have stuck with but fancied a couple of cheap vintage fizz for Christmas morning. I have some Pol Roger for the meal though a really beautiful fizz at a decent price.

Shall open one and if as poor as you reckon will hide it in the cellar and open in 10 years for a bit of fun.

Lack of info / tasting experiences still has the 05 vintage off my radar unless Ray gives me a heads up on a deal.

It shouldn't be poor. I have enjoyed HS Gold Top on most vintages. In fact it was on offer at the same price a few weeks ago and I tried to grab some, but my local store didn't have any.

Majestic are changing over from 2004 to 2005 and I was speculating Morrison may be to and if they had both the '05 might be better. The '04 will be fine though. I'd grab some myself, but I have bought alternatives now.

For crying out loud Richard, who said it was poor ? In my opinion, '05 is likely to be better at base vintage level

Ha ha...... You're winding me up. Look, I'd buy a couple if I wasn't well stocked already.

For 15 knickers it is a bargain. It just aint up there with the cru wines - OK

Duh.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that whatever the vintage, it will not be worth the money.

(btw, only teasing)

I bought an 04 Gold top when Morrisons had the 'poo for £15 offer running last month

was gonna save it for wedding anniversary next year but will be interested to hear what you make of it beforehand Richard

I had read the 04 was a well balanced vintage for champagne, 05 favoured chardonnay more than PN

apparently 2008 is gonna be the year to watch out for when it is released

Shez, I have one of these Gold Top '04's now. Will definitely let you know when I get to it.

Talking shampoo - after the big day,,,,,,

Also scored a few Duval-Leroy 1er cru champagne "on the new discreet livery" from Waitrose at £14.99 (less 50%) this on 27th ! only 3 left so grabbed two, and left one for someone who should be pleased.

Opened one Christmas morning to try out.

Quiet surprised by this, nice small bubbles not to fizzy which I prefer fresh crisp with good acid levels to balance it out nicely, not much toasty notes to speak of though which I like !!.

A refreshing fizz for next to nothing.
Open and enjoy !! Not a block buster but Good value.
