Single varietal made from grapes from two different vineyards. 50% from Tupungato 1100m ASL and 50% from Barrancas 700m ASL.

A gimmick you would think?

No, this is like two wines in one. I feel I can detect the two different grapes in this. It is like a Bold and spicy Aussie Shiraz, blended with a softer fruity French Syrah. There's something herbal there too, maybe stalky, but its very subtle. Great complexity. It really is delicious, especially 24 hours or more after opening when the spice becomes more subdued. Excellent value too.

i've been meaning to have another go at it for a while after enjoying when at a tasting last yr

Have mentioned it on here a couple of times, dunno whether that may have made you reach for it.

was trying to stop buying any more wine but I do want to get a few bottles of Emilio Moro 06 RdD before the end of the current maj offer at the beginning of Nov.
Might throw in a few of these to bring down the average cost

I think you've misread the title. This is the Shiraz. I also didn't mention that its on offer at Waitrose, so I've changed the subject to show this.

I haven't tried the Malbec yet, but after trying this will do so soon.

I have not seen the Gestos Malbec anywhere, including Majestic, but was aware of the brand from your previous posts. When the WR wine manager recommended it to me, your endorsement of the Malbec sealed it for me.

A word of warning, as I know you are sensitive to this, GK. It may appear slightly hot on opening. This subsides along with the spice. Give it a chance, and you will be rewarded :wink:

I bought another 4, I think, but have not got back to it yet. Although nearly have on a number of occasions, only to change my mind.

New vintage now, so you are in the hands of their level of consistency. Let us know if you try.

Still a fair number of 2008 on my shelf so opted for them rather than the 2009 alongside
I liked the Malbec so should like this even more

Agree with a lot of what Tribs has said
Bit too hot after opening, needs to be given an hour for the heat to blow off
Rich and spicy with a layer of minerality and the oak is nicely integrated where it doesn't dominate and make the wine seem too sweet
Will follow up later after it's been open 24hrs before giving final judgement

while the initial heat had blown off there was still a bit evident at the end of each mouthful so a bit disappointed there (maybe a bit more time may help)
As seems to be the case with a number of South Am Shiraz/syrah's I recently tried, this is a bit of a new world rhone style with a peppery note
Potential for it to be good if the heat wasn't there

The heat didn't really dissipate even by the 3rd day so a bit disappointed there
14% alcohol in this bottle and yet the Merriman 2008 has 14.5% and no sign of alcohol burn!
Thinking I may return the other 2 bottles for something different

Erm, maybe I'm fairly tolerant of heat and as such it didn't bother me. Am recovering from flu at the moment, but will try another soon.
