I went off VMPB SB some time ago, this company is moving in the wrong direction, all sugar and no finesse.

Gk, I regret that our palates will not keep VM's profits as high as their owners wish them to be.
I returned ½ dozen of the '08 PB basic last year, thinking – You can keep this bloody stuff, or flog to the gnomes. Let’s face it, now, the’re making for a slightly different market.

I will say that the Cellar Selection ’07 last month was still quite lush, and, no where near as sweet as The Ned 09. There was richness (too much for Goose) but it was not intrusive, and didn't spoil the effect

I'd be very disappointed if the whole "budget end" market at Villa Maria was going that way.

I enjoyed the Private Bin SB, also the Gew and the Cha / Vio blend. Did NOT like the Cellar Select SB nor this PG.

Thanks for responding Ba,

You enjoyed VMPB MSB '09 - Yes or No - Quite different to '08

If I'm reading this right.....I totally agree, you would not have enjoyed the Cellar Select SB 2008. The '07 however had much better acidity, better fruit dimension, and cut to the palate, as well as being too rich for Goose....he did not slam it though, just too heavy for him.

Please let me know which Cellar Select vintage you were drinking at the time ? I thought I was the only bloke on the planet to still have two '07 left !

Cheers for that.

I think based on Ba's guess the SB thread, GK was aware that VM Cellar Selection is now on offer at Tesco.
Online no vintage is specifiedd but in case any of you are interested....

My local Tesco had a discount shelf full of VM CS 07 SB yesterday.
Discount was only £2 off down to £8.49

Was quite surpised to see so many of the 07 vintage still available tho.

Don't think I'll be botherig myself

This will eventually be a regional clear out at Big T. I'm predicting a 50% off to clear the rest of the '07's. Becuase I'm such a fan of that vintage, and because CS 07 is a fuller textured style - I will be on it for sure. The last one I had, just one left now, was lovely, not for Goose, but for me, still fresh enough, and juicy, and voluptuous SB. It has aged beneficially for me, it was too heavy on release to be a dancing youngster.

Much will depend on whether the wine has survived a life in the store, and for how long it was subjected to that torture.

Storage situation was exactly what I was wondering about

Also Ba's Vavasour is a slightly cheaper option right now....

Thanks for the bin end progress report Shez. I'm on it, when it's a fiver.

Got the last 4 x 2007 Promenade De Papes CdR villages last night at half past nine, a round fiver each. The shelf location was cleared right out. Was about to leave, and spotted the evening wine supervisor talking to staff. Popped the Q. Have you any in the back ? Come with me sir, I've got these. He had four bottles hiding in an odds and ends location that I had not seen seen. As luck would have it, they were all 2007.

The vintage year is on the back label. Tis not that unusual, when the producer wants to save a bob or two in bottling costs - bulk printing economy of scale.

Pleased with that outcome :)
