If you look beyond the promotional stuff (Mount Augusta Shiraz reduced from ?6.99 to ?1.99 !!) there appears to be some good reductions on the everyday favourites,

Jean-Paul Selles, Brouilly 2004 -?3.99
Jadot, Beaujolais Villages 2004 -?3.64
Montana Pinot Noir 2004- ?3.49
Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz 2002- ?3.49
Ironstone Cabernet Franc 2002- ?3.49
Palandri Estate, Frankland River (Aus) Riesling 2003- 3.49

I also got -5% for above six but there are other offers, The Babich East (NZ) Coast PN is also worth a look at ?3.49 and Montana Unoaked Chard at ?2.99

:D

GK

Thanks for flagging this up.

I've just raced down to town and bought 2 cases of the very good 2003 Palandri Estate riesling for the very silly price of ?3.49 and a case of the excellant 2004 Divinum Mosel riesling for the even sillier price of ?2.24.

Leasingham Magnus is gorgeous and probably my fav Aussie riesling but expensive at nearly ?8.

Mel

Apologies if i'm being cheeky ...is there any chance of you doing another Sancerre/PouillyFume tasting for the weekly column section of the site.

have got tastings booked ahead until 11th october, which is a bit far.

will trawl through my tasting notes tomorrow and give you a rundown, here on the forum. Sainsbury's taste the difference, interestingly, i think:

TTD Pouilly Fume 2005 - Surprisingly catty for the Loire. Intense acidity and catty, elder taste. Lasts and lasts in a very attractive way.10/05/2006
* (ie a red star) - 8.99

compared to

TTD Sancerre 2004 - More restrained than the Pouilly Fume. Green and grippy. Almost roughtly phenolic. 10/05/2006 - 8.99 no star

will get back to you tomorrow (fri)

Post subject:  Somerfield Wine Sale- Sancerre/Pouilly Fume tasting notes

here are notes from the last year - note vintages and tasting dates as sauvignon changes a lot in just 6 months. always try to get the newest vintage. NB asterisk is good.

Sainsbury Jean-Paul Molley Pouilly Fume, Antique 2004 Bit of sulphur on the nose. Very little Sauvignon aroma. Showing some age. Evolved and less zingy than you'd expect. Peapod taste. 10/05/2006 - 11.99

Sainsbury La Moussiere Sancerre 2004 Green raw pears smell. Intense acidity, long flavour, underripe gooseberries, not floral at all. Sept 05 -13.99

Majestic Pouilly Fume "Les Ferrees", Marcel Sautejeau 2005 Very cheap if reduced to ?5.99. Nice, ripe, fruity smell, but mineral as well. Bit of fizz in the mouth, which isn't my thing at all. The finish taste is very savoury. 20/04/2006 - 8.99

M&S Pouilly Fume Domaine Chatelain 2004 Not much smell. Too much grip for 9.99. End not fresh enough. 28/9/05 - 9.99

Majestic Pouilly Fume, Dom des Rabichattes, Grebet Pere et Fils 2005 Smells great. Very mineral taste. Green, savoury and bone dry. Good.20/04/2006 * - 9.99

Waitrose Pouilly Fume, Jean Vincent 2004 Ripe Sauvignon character on the nose. Slightly petillant. Lovely fresh acidity, tasty and long. Very, very good. 12/4/06 * - 10.69

Waitrose Pouilly Fume, Masson Blondelet 2004 Not much smell. Very phenolic and grippy. Needs food. Lasts fabulously well. 12/4/06 - 9.99

Morrisons Sancerre Edmund 2001 V heavy bottle and nice label. A fab, fab spicy smell with creamy oak. Yum. Compares with Pessac without the waxy fullness of Semillon. Really delicious. Expensive, though. 11/09/05 * 19.99

Majestic Sancerre Les Baudrieres, Dominique Baud 2005 Creamy, attractive smell. Dry, fresh, mineral - wet stones - taste. VG at ?6.99 20/04/06- 8.99

Waitrose Sancerre Rouge, Belle Dame, Vacheron 2003 Warm cherry smell. Lovely oaky texture. Saddles and ripe fruit. Yum 12/4/06 - 20.00

Waitrose Sancerre, Domaine Jean & Michel Naudet 2005 Lots of elder in a fresh attractive smell. Very varietally clear on the nose. Tasty, but slightly lacking acidity for me - a little broad. 12/4/06 9.79

Sainsbury TTD Pouilly Fume 2005 Surprisingly catty for the Loire. Intense acidity and catty, elder taste. Lasts and lasts in a very attractive way. 10/05/06 * 8.99

Sainsbury TTD Sancerre 2004 More restrained than the Pouilly Fume. Green and grippy. Almost roughtly phenolic. 10/05/06 8.99

hope this helps

Hi Mel

I live just outside Lichfield, Staffs, this particular store is in Burntwood, Staffs, around four miles away from me. I know there is a national promotion but it may not include all the wines that have been reduced in this branch, it has struggled since it opened 18 months ago, used to be a Kwik-Save, maybe it is looking to close and wants to clear stock.

I went back last night for a closer inspection, I spotted a few more bargains including.-
Misiones de Rengo, Cab Sauv / Syrah 2003 at ?2.99, this vintage won IWC Gold ?04 & IWSC Silver ?04 (not that awards guarantee quality but I do love this wine), a steal at this price.

G
Good move on the Palandri Riesling

Kevin

I can confirm the Palandri Riesling has plenty of life left in it. In my experience, well made Ausi Riesling & Semillon have enough structure to improve with time....... if you can keep your hands off them, that is!

Hi Mel & G K , the 3 ( actually it ended up 5 !!) we tried were ALL great value but the Misiones Cab/syrah reserva was outstanding, not really a "quaffing" wine as we thought it needed food to compliment its big character but one of the best bargains we've had,the Otra Vida was also a steal, the Santa Carolina, not as good but at ?2.99 before the 5% discount !! I ain't complaining , the surprise we tried was Zontes footsteps rose (90% cab 10% petit verdot)my wife went back and picked up some more( and came back with some Banrock Stn spark shiraz at ?3.99 ) I feel there has been a cock up with some stores converting from kwik save to somerfield as the 2 stores we tried had different prices (picked up Montana Pinot noir at ?2.74??!!)
On a separate note Mel we tried the Tesco Abbots Vale chardonnay(bottled in the U.K !)(after my leg slapping from you !!) It was fine at ?3 .50 but I would'nt pay the suggested full price. cheers Kevin.
