Made by Fournier Pere Et Fils from 70 yr old vines. Pear and mineral. Classic Sancerre. Apart from the pear. Obviously. G ~ nice but not worth the money ~ |

G ~ nice but not worth the money ~ Yeah, I enjoyed a Waitrose Pouilly Fume' from the 2005 super ripe vintage. One that I laid down deliberately to see if it would go anywhere. It was a £7.99 special of theirs. I do know what you mean about the pear, The 2005 PF has pineapple as well. Goose: We try to understand vintages,. Was this Sancerre very lightly oaked ? Was it too ripe ? Was it too old, or was the fruit too "Simple" With 70 year old vines, I'd be expecting something rather spectacular for a super ripe harvest. Concentrated and integrated, what was the Alc % level % One would expect another degree from 2005 conditions. Many growers would be guarded and very jealous of knarled 70 year old vines - to make a special cuvee' I think of Fournier as bulk producers - you could have found a Vacheron or Joseph Mellot one for £14 quid. Sorry about your dissapointment |

The wine was unoaked and surprisingly pale, light/medium bodied with good acidity. Not at all rich or complex. Fournier make Tesco's Finest Loire sb's and the PF is very good although needs drinking now if you have the 2007. I thought that as this was his very best cuvee it would be worth a try. It was ok, just nothing special. Reminded me of a Josmeyer Pinot Gris 2005. Only the Sancerre was lighter with a touch of chalk on the end. The Josmeyer was very rich and needed food. Had the same pear flavour though. |

Pale - Hmnnn, Stored well then, and in the dark, and perhaps the fruit was picked early given the 2005 conditions, to preserve the acidity, and to make a racey / trendy number. The budget Waitrose 2005 PF drunk very recently was lovely, a bit "mellow yellow", but not your style. |
