[quote="Goosegogs"]Lovely. Light bodied with pungent classic flavours of blackcurrant leaf and citrus. Yeah, I looked at that Malborough SB when I took the dreaded 2007 Margaret River SB & Semillion back. Thinking that their buyer hadn't got a clue, I passed it over. Thanks for bringing this to my notice. I'm drinking The Crossings 2007 Awatere valley Malborough at the moment, more similar in style to Curious Cove. The Crossings does have a touch of cobblestones and old wet pavement, and has razor sharp acidity. Not much tropical friut to speak off, instead, shed loads of fresh limes, citrus and lemon zest and Gooseberries, G, G, G, and a back flavour of artificially ripe yellow nectrarine, the flavor of the flesh right next to the stone where it is red tinged. I'm glad I'm back on the 2007's You may like this style Mr G, because it is pale green gold and crystal, very pungent, with white current and red current leaf notes. This Malborough SB will cut through the most oily white grilled fish even if it were seasonned to death or was drowned in over strong white, cheese or herb butter sauce. The fruit at The Crossings was picked a little earlier I reckon (me thinks) to make a drier, zesty, and cut-the-palate style. The Awatere valley is volcanic shale soils right down to the river bank they say, between the waters of Cloudy Bay and the mountains. I may keep a few back for 2010, and see if it subdues itself a bit. Is This For You ? Mr G. |

Awatere Valley is said to have flavours of tomato leaf and stone fruits ( usually nectarine or ripe peaches, so well spotted there ) whereas Wairau Valley has the more classic flavours of blackcurrant/cat's pee and nettles. I generally prefer the nettles style....but am getting more into Awatere and the Brancott Valleys ( Montana Reseve is a good example of this style ). Sainsbury have Villa Maria Reserve Awatere Valley for big bucks so The Crossings for about a fiver less would be a good one to try. From the way you descibe it though it may be a little fuller in body than I like. Do try the new Southbank Estate ( Wairau Valley ) at Asda. Very delicate but lovely flavour and none of the searing acidity which makes you wince and say rude things even in polite company. Not that I know any polite company... |

Hello Mike, The Clocktower was very ordinary. However, Clocktower ' The Fingers ' looks as if it's a second wine by the same winery so it could be worth checking out. Btw.....i'm not fooled. It might be Mike by day but i'm sure it's Sharon the cross dressing shandy drinking chav by night. |
