Strongly vegetal. Stormhoek at a fiver less is no worse/better.

However, this won gold somewhere. Probably the South African carrot and cabbage growers wine awards 2008.

Can I direct you to the South African Sauvignon tasting we did earlier in the year - Previous Articles.

Although I got the usual compost heap with hint of asparagus, I think the taster who mentioned furniture polish should be a master of wine or at least mistress of dodgy aromas..

Springfield Special Cuvee is still the only SA sb that i've consistantly enjoyed. One on the wines on my wines to taste before I die list is their top sauv ' Life From Stone '.

I covered Sauvignon Blanc with some 20 yr old students last night and had given them various textbook flavours that they might expect.

One quiet little bloke who sat next to me said "I know it sounds odd, but this smells of nettles". He's a complete beginner and had no prompting. There are just people out there who find smells that others can't put their fingers on, or even pick up. The other students - all Agricultural boys and girls, who have a good working knowledge of nettles - nodded in agreement.

Are you mocking my furniture polish finding panel member? Is this because you're a Mr Sheen man? Those of us who make the effort with our furniture know what she means.

I've never got ' furniture polish ' although I do sometimes get a smell similar to nail varnish ( or nail varnish remover ) on southern French sauvignon. Which, as you know, is pretty uninspiring stuff in the world of sauvignon blanc.

I always expect the following smells

South Africa - green and vegetal
NZ - blackcurrent leaf or something richer/sweeter and more tropical ( these make me groan is disappointment as I know before tasting that I won't like the wine )

Loire Central Vineyards - the chalky mineral smell of a Sancerre always smells slighty biscuity to me

Touraine and Chile - wet stones and grapefruit
Bordeaux - honey and citrus

Anywhere hot like Australia - nail varnish or nothing

Regards to the Mistress of the Dodgy Aroma

Original and best, from bees and bean trees. Thanks for looking in, Mel

Mr G, Anywhere hot like Australia - nail varnish or nothing. Ok, when your Misses is getting all gussied-up, and you get a waft at the top of the stairs. Is that what you mean ?

Nothing like nail varnish. Furniture polish is a waxy, woody, vanilla smell. Perhaps we mean newly polished furniture - without the spray.
