And you called me a fashion victim for liking Musar, Graham! Surely CB is the ultimate fashion victim wine (otherwise, The Evil Empire wouldn't be selling it, would they? |

Just got back from the MW exam. I'd already passed the tasting, but on the last day (of 3) of tasting this week, friends who still had to sit it, had a Blossom Hill White and a Black Tower Rivaner!! What is the IMW coming to!? They weren't asked what they were, but had to describe them and the market they were suitable for!! They'd had a couple of Pichon Barons the day before and a couple of Roederer wines, but no Sauvignon, except in a blend with Semillon in a Pessac and an Aus blend. Also 4 white Burgundies and 4 red Burgundies to date and put in quality order. Almost wish I'd been tasting. |

Best of luck Mel. How shall we address you in future once you have acquired your MW status? Lady Quaffers of Offerstown MW? (btw- I’m about to do the WSET Advanced, how many light-years away from doing the MW do you think I am? and how much will it cost me?). |

I took the Diploma in 96/7 and started the MW in 2003. It is VERY, VERY expensive and completely time consuming. A friend in Norway, whose relatives were giving her a hard time about getting round to passing, asked them how many Masters degrees were there in Norway that had only ONE successful student, EVER. There are 251 MWs in the world and every single one has put their life on hold for 3-6 years, in order to achieve the astonishing level of knowledge and writing skill. This isn't just stopping having hobbies, or weekends, but every single thing other than basic cleanliness, sleep and nourishment. Coming down from that level of control may take me weeks. I'm not saying don't do it, but you will definitely, definitely underestimate the personal sacrifice that is involved. You also need a very understanding and supporting partner. Or a huge personal fortune and an army of staff. |

As I suspected, no worries, I had no intention in trying anyway, at 37yo my days of studying and relentless self-sacrifice are long behind me (marriage aside ), I will stick with drinking the stuff, it's more fun! |

Congratulations! But why are you doing it exactly? Seems a bit too masochistic to me! |

A very complex answer exists, but would take a few thousand words. Because it's there, because it's a challenge, because I didn't bother with uni and so didn't push myself - ever. It's fabulous fun, the other students are interesting, intelligent and as obsessed as I am. It's been a huge journey, and should ultimately enable me to do something worthwhile both because I'll be taken seriously and because just doing it has forced me to address every single aspect of wine. and more, but I don't know you well enough. |

An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. (Benjamin Franklin). Son, if you really want something in this life, you have to work for it. Now quiet! they're about to announce the lottery numbers. (Homer Simpson). |
