I have finally started my search for the perfect farmyardy Burgundy.

This isn't it....it smells and tastes of red wine...it's quite rich yet pleasantly smooth but it has a wow factor of nil.

There isn't even any rubber or chocolate and there is a noticeable absence of both violets and horseshit

Best I give up now...if anyone wants me i'll be the quiet one in the corner with the dunces cap on drinking Montana sauvignon blanc..

I did get a hint of leather though..is that good ?

I may reappear in 6 months with brief tasting notes on the 2007 Marlborough sauvignons blancs.

I shall be expecting plenty of blackcurrent leaf and capsium...but no more leather

It should have 3 things, I think. Fresh acidity, very smooth, almost undetectable tannin, and fragrance. At £8 you probably won't get much, other than a light fruity smell. What about trying one of these. I'd start with the first, and work up to the second, if you think you like the style!

Chorey les Beaune 2004 Dom Pascal Maillard Waitrose 11.99 Appealing new oak smell, rather saddle like. Also, lovely saddle flavour in the mouth. A wine to linger over. Very inviting. 19/10/2006

Beaune 1er Cru, Clos des Mouches 2003, Joseph Drouhin Waitrose 35.00 Perfumed, almost like greenhouse tomatoes. Full body, tongue-coating, rich and delicious. 19/10/2006

I quite like the Bourgogne Hautes Cotes De Beaune from Tesco but I only ever buy it on offer, as it is now at £5.59

There is plenty of acid and character, a bit musty, I think that’s why I like it so much, I usually chill it slightly too. I have enjoyed the ’02 & ’03, last week I picked up a couple of bottles of the ’05, not tried this yet.

I have had the Chorey les Beaune 2004 Dom Pascal Maillard too, Jancis Robinson raved about it some time ago, really liked it but at almost £12 it is an occasional treat.

As for the Clos des Mouches at £35……. maybe when I am twenty one again.

I wouldn't look for a decent Burgundy in the supermarket, under £15 at least, though the Waitrose Chorey looks to be an exception.

Best thing is to go to Burgundy, I'd say. You can find lovely stuff in lesser-known villages under €10.

I think the fragrance is the main thing really. Should be extravagant, sensual, very aromatic yet immeasurably subtle. Ethereal is the word that sums it up for me.

2006 is very light for Pinot.

It has a very pleasant nutty taste though.

Not as good as the Sainsbury wine.
